７月にはいってもう２週目、シンガポールにいると季節を感じないので、時間の流れが早く感じる気がしています。
今日は過去の演奏動画から、バルトークの"Contrasts"についてご紹介させていただきたいと思います。

現在スタジオに来られている短期コースの生徒さんで、バルトークを勉強されている方がいらっしゃり、
ちょうどよい機会かと思い、ハンガリーを代表する音楽家、バルトークの音楽についてこちらの方で少し触れられればと思いました。
バルトークは１８８１年にハンガリーで生まれた作曲家、ピアニスト、民族音楽研究家です。
彼はアメリカに亡命していますが、アメリカ国籍は取得していないので、ハンガリー人ということになります。
バルトークは、政治的理由でアメリカに亡命後も彼自身はアメリカにはなかなか馴染めませんでしたが、それでもアメリカではバルトークの作品を耳にしたり演奏される機会はとても多いです。
ご紹介する動画、"Contrasts"は室内楽の中でも難易度が高く、私自身もメンバーとのリハーサルを多く重ねた思い出深い曲です。
バルトークを演奏前はメシアンの"世の終わりのための四重奏"を勉強しておりましたが、そのお陰で特徴あるリズムなどわりとスムーズにこちらの曲に入れたような気がします。
バルトークは1940年にアメリカに移住しました。 この曲はその移住直前の1938年に書かれ、1939年にニューヨークでヴァイオリンのヨーゼフ・シゲティ、クラリネットのベニー・グッドマン、そしてバルトーク自身のピアノによって初演されています。 第１楽章 Verbunkos（寡兵の踊り）
Verbunkosとは、ハンガリー特有の習慣で、入隊前の新兵が皆の前で歌い踊ることになっており、この音楽はその踊りを描写したものです。 演奏の際、コーチングをヴァイオリニストのMark Menziesにお願いしたのですが、ヴァイオリンの最初のピツィカートだけで最初の３、４回のリハが過ぎるくらいに”出だし”のパートを猛練習した記憶があります。
技術的にかなり難易度の高い曲なので、皆メンバーも真剣な表情になってしまいますが、Menziesから"この曲は一種のジョークなのだ、おどけて弾け！"とリハの間中言われていたのが今でも忘れられません。 これから３回に分けて"Contrasts"より１楽章、２楽章、３楽章をご紹介できればと思います。

Béla Bartók was born in 1881 in the small Banatian town of Nagyszentmiklós in the Kingdom of Hungary. He was a composer, pianist and also researcher of folk music. His fieldwork with the composer Zoltán Kodály formed the basis for all later research in the field, and he published major studies of Hungarian, Romanian, and Slovakian folk music. He worked folk themes and rhythms into his own music. Bartok immigrated to the United States in 1940, in order to avoid World War II. Bartok composed “Contrasts” in 1938 before he immigrated. It was performed in New York in 1939 by Joseph Szigeti on violin, Benny Goodman on clarinet, and Bartok at the piano. After that, these three people performed this piece in many places in the U.S. Bartok was asked by jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman to write this piece so the clarinet part uses jazz idioms a lot. “Contrasts” is “The fictitious dance music" which mixes jazz with Hungarian dance music. In some parts of music, Bartok incorporated elaborate, unique, jokes.
"Verbunkos"
This Verbunkos is a unique custom of Hungary around the end of the 18th century. A conscript who volunteered for the light-cavalry regiment had to dance and sing with the accompaniment of a Gypsy orchestra at a before enlistment. This movement describes the dance of the conscript.
